Tupper Lake is about 20 miles north of Long Lake in the Town of Tupper Lake(formerly Altamont). Here NY 30 meets NY 3, the oldest and best highway in the 'Daks. It's just over the Hamilton-Franklin County line in Franklin County. Franklin County the northernmost county on the route and it borders Canada. Tupper Lake is in the heart of 1000 lakes country and the source of ten rivers, so it's watery with rolling hills. The Raquette River flows through it. All the major mountains are to the south and east so it's pretty level drive all the way to Canada from there. South of the village, in Moody just south of the Raquette River bridge, the water table is very high so the road is extremely heaved and potholed. Doing the 40 mph speed limit will cause some rattling and bouncing. Watch out for the snow drifts in winter when approaching the village from the south, the road is built on a grade above the flat marsh and is south and east of Tupper Lake(lake) and is on a causeway for a while. The wind blows fierce off the lake, and the snow drifts all over! But as you cross the Raquette River, its a good stretch to the village line. Recently, there is a construction zone all the way from the village line to the 55 MPH zone south of Moody, for about 3 miles. Hopefully, this will rectify a lot of the problems cause they are putting in new drainage. Then in the village, expect more potholes and heaves until town line(40 mph zone) east on Park Street.

Summmer - Fall 2007 There is an road construction project to fix the part of 30, from the village line south through Moody to the 55 MPH zone. There are extensive delays during work hours. Last time through it added about twenty five minutes in waiting.

In the village, NY Route 30 North will pick up NY Route 3 and they'll go together for 6 miles eastbound. NY 30 will turn north at the junction in Wawbeek and if you go straight on NY Route 3 East, Saranac Lake and Lake Placid are close by. From Tupper Lake to Saranac on NY 3, the road is known as the Olympic Trail, but it's better known as the Sara-Tupper Olympic Mountain Speedway. The road is fast and well cleared, but it's busy & well patrolled, so be very wary. But the scenery is some of the prettiest in the Adirondack Mountains. You can save money on Lake Placid type events by staying and dining in Tupper Lake. It is the largest village north of Gloversville in the Adirondack Parks on NY 30. It has a variety of shops and services and a few smaller chain type stores.

Tupper Lake Recreation Center on Raquette Pond

The Town of Tupper Lake (formerly Altamont) operates a beach & campground on Little Wolf Lake. There are primitive and hookup campsites available. It's about 1 mile north of NY Route 3 West, north of the Adirondack RR. On Raquette Pond, off the south end of Demars Blvd, NY Route 3 West, the village has a community recreation center. This is where the "Woodsmen's Day" is hosted, as well as the National Tinman Triathalon* and the Masonic Craft & Flea Market. They are planning outdoor concerts on the weekends for the summer season. There is a boardwalk along the water there too. The village has xc ski trails behind the grammar school. The school is on the south side of NY Routes 3 & 30, Park Street on the eastern village line (the start of the 40 MPH zone), on the way to Saranac-Placid. The Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks is open Friday - Monday. It was built on an oxbow of the Raquette River on Hosley Avenue South. It features state of the art nature interpretive center including an underground glass viewing area of the river and soil bottom, like a big aquarium. Other features in village @include a small, double screen movie theater, the prices are much less than the usual huge suburban cineplexes and the owner really cares about movies. Finally, there is word that the Big Tupper Ski Resort, by Adirondack Club and Resorts, on NY 30 in Moody, will probably re-open in three a years, which will be a great boon for the winter season. The Adirondack Club and Resorts are behind this deal. which should revive Tupper's winter season, which we all should be grateful for after this horrible winter.
* Tinman Triathalon vs Lake Placid's Ironman Triathalon; the Tinman was the lumberjack in Oz
